The Carlton Hotel is housed in a classical, elegant building, which dates from the early 20th century. Over the years it has played host to such luminaries as Orson Welles, Ava Gardner, Ernest Hemingway, Lauren Bacall and Albert Einstein, as well as most of Spain's great bullfighters. The public spaces feature marble floors and chandeliers, while comfortable furniture, cream walls and classical paintings adorn the 148 guestrooms, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Situated on the ground floor, the hotel’s stylish Artagan restaurant serves traditional Basque cuisine and seafood and is open for lunch and dinner.
