The hotel is located in the east of Bilbao, near Extebarria Park and next to Begona Basilica. It is just over a kilometre from the main train station (across the river) and nearly 2 kilometres from the Guggenheim (which can none the less be reached easily by metro.)

Built in 1967 and refurbished in 2005, the Barcelo Avenida Hotel is a modern property, its neat, plain exterior adorned with deeply recessed windows. The spacious lobby is brightly appointed, with two lifts opposite the reception desk. The 189 avant garde, spacious and outward-facing guestrooms feature soothing beige and cream décor. All are clean and well maintained, as are the generously sized en suite bathrooms with tub/shower combos. The hotel’s other facilities include the Cyber Corner, WiFi, a huge car park and a Spa and Fitness Centre (located on the ground floor). It is ideal for meetings, business and leisure travels or urban relaxation. The restaurant offers a very popular daily set menu, à la carte menus and a Four Seasons buffet breakfast.
